Like Yanni is to classical, Buchanan is to…alternative? This CD verges and then purges so far over into the strictly commercial that I find myself having a hard time to say much of anything about it. Topics float from the overused “my girlfriend dumped me and now I’m lonely”, to the “only you make me a better person, although I’m a jerk when it comes down to it”.
The highlight of the entire album is “American Son”, which takes some sort of minimal political viewpoint and spawns a song out of it. This song is also a little more passionate. However, these guys seem to be singing from their souls, souls that somehow resemble countless others who try their hand at this style of music. Or maybe from what they think are their souls?
