Review: The Von Bondies

The Von Bondies
“Raw and Rare”
(Dim Mak)

The Jack White-approved Detroit garage rockers put out an album, of yes, raw and rare live recordings from 2001 and 2002 for the BBC and a few caught live in Detroit. It includes most of their 2001 album “Lack of Communication.” High quality recording captures the fire and intensity of a band grounded in Detroit’s sonic history such as seminal band MC5. Marcie Bolen’s soulful vocals on “My Baby’s Cryin'” stand out, as does the fierce and furious guitar work on “R&R Nurse”. Arguably, this album is more impressive than their studio work. It’s certainly more urgent. Garage rock is best heard live. But when you can’t do that, check this.
